Starred And Spangled

Holidays and special occasions are fun to plan for.  Getting time off work to be with friends and family where you get to bring your popular potato salad, dress festive and reserve a good spot for the celebration is top of the list.  If you're like me, I usually wing it.  I'm the one at the last minute hitting the grocery store thinking bad words while I stand in a mile-long line.  Wouldn't it be fun to hang a red, white & blue bunting off the front porch railing?  I wonder if the eve of the 4th is too late to paint some cute Mason jars to hold utensils.  Could I live in a house painted in red, white & blue?

Image titleI'd like to meet the person who thought it was a good idea to paint the exterior in red & white stripes and add a few stars.  I'm a proud American. Feel real lucky our country's colors aren't poop brown or pink.  Worse, poop brown AND pink.  Does the pride wane if you lived in a country with less appealing colors?  I could probably live in a red, white & blue house if given the choice of the two.

Marketing stats tell us red, white & blue are some of the most well-received color combinations.  My high school colors were as American as apple pie.  Some of our competitors were mustard & brown.  I mean, we voted on the color choice.  What happened for them to win mustard & brown?!
Red, white & blue is so versatile, too.  You can make it into a pie.  Use it in interior decorating.  Paint your nails.  Clothes.  Advertising.  Clearly, we aren't alone in our thinking.  Make all that fun with poop brown & pink!  Just doesn't have the same zing.

Did you know colors have meaning?  Blue relates to calm.  Red equals power.  White?  Purity.   Marrying the three colors, honestly, should be taken in small doses.  Like the Fourth of July.  If you wore it on any old Tuesday, someone is bound to think you're either late or early to something.  It couldn't be because "you felt like being spangle-y today."

July is a good time to celebrate our independence, too.  I wonder if that was by accident.  Our forefathers were all gathered around thinking a few hundred years from now, "It'll suck if it's a blizzard trying to enjoy firecrackers and corn on the cob.  Let's hold off until so we can pick banjos without fear of our digits snapping off."
I hope this one day offers you some well-earned downtime, you enjoy it safely with lots of oohs and ahhs and you earn yourself a new recipe you can share with me.   Don't forget to get all starred and spangled either.  That's how memories are created.
